Ahmed known as “Ahmed Bare” received 18 votes while his rival Ahmed Abshir Jama got 9 votes in the first round of the election held in Garowe on Wednesday.
He served as Puntland MP for nine years.
During his mayoral campaign, Ahmed Bare said strengthening the city’s security is his first priority. He also pledged to promote hygiene and improving infrastructure.
Hundreds of Garowe residents took to the social media to welcome the new mayor of the city for the next five years.
Mr Bare would replace interim mayor Ahmed Mohamed Du’ale, who decided not to run for the election due to personal reasons.
