Garowe-(Puntland Mirror) The Parliamentary Assembly of the Puntland government elected Abdirisaaq Ahmed Said as the new chairman on Thursday, following an election attended by the recently selected members of parliament.
Abdirisaq secured 37 votes in the first round, while the two closest competitors each received 10 votes. Former Speaker of the Parliament, Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril, who was also in the running, garnered 8 votes.
The first deputy governor elected was Mohamed Bari Shire, and the second deputy, known as Awowe, was Mohamed Mohamud Isse.
The Puntland parliament is scheduled to elect a president and vice president on January 8.
The new chairman is a young man who has previously served as the chairman of the Puntland Transitional Election Commission (TPEC).
Political analysts suggest that today’s election signals a new era of change in Puntland, led by a younger generation.
