Garowe-(Puntland Mirror) Chinese navy ship handed over three suspected pirates to Puntland authorities on Friday, Reuters news agency reported, citing Puntland’s PMPF officials.

The pirates were involved in the attempted hijacking in April of the OS35, a Tuvalu-flagged cargo ship that was rescued by the Chinese navy after the crew sent a distress call.

The deputy director of Puntland maritime police forces (PMPF), Saeed Ahmed Saeed told Reuters that Chinese navy ship handed over three pirates to Puntland.

He added that the pirates handed to the Puntland authorities included a local pirate leader known as Aw Kombe.

Over the past weeks, Somali pirates have stepped up its attacks against commercial ships sailing in Somalia waters.

In recent, speaking to the local media some of the local fishermen threatened to take up guns another time and return piracy to battle what they called “the foreign trawlers.”
