Senior Al-Shabab official surrenders to Somali federal government

Mogadishu-(Puntland Mirror) A senior leader of Al-Shabab armed group has surrendered to the federal government of Somalia.

Ibrahim Aden Ibrahim known as Nadara, served as the head of Al-Shabab for education in Bay and Bakool regions.

Speaking with journalists in Mogadishu, Ibrahim said he decided to leave his former group and surrender to the Somali government, Ibrahim noted that he joined the group nine years ago.

In May this year, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud extended amnesty to all Al-Shabab militants ready to surrender.

The Somali federal government has welcomed the surrender of the former Al-Shabab official, according to the minister of internal security Abdirizak Omar.

“The Somali government facilitated and welcomed Ibrahim Aden, an Al-Shabaab official who surrendered to security forces of the government, he has been in the group for nine years as he told us” Minister Abdirizak Omar told Somalia’s state-run Sonna Agency.

There was no immediate comment from Al-Shabab, the armed group is fighting to overthrow internationally backed Somali government.
