Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo elected as Somali President

Mogadishu-(Puntland Mirror) Somali lawmakers on Wednesday elected Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo as the country’s new president, according to the official result.

He received 184 votes while his closest rival Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud garnered 97 votes in the second round of voting, Somalia’s parliament speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari announced.

The outgoing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud conceded the results of the election.

Nearly 329 lawmakers from both lower house and upper house has chosen the new president.

The voting took place in Afisyone venue at Adan Ade international airport in the capital, Mogadishu.

At least 20 presidential candidates including the incumbent President were contested the election.

The new President was sworn into office rapidly after the result.

Farmajo will serve a four-year term in office, and the inauguration ceremony will take place in the upcoming days.

Who is Farmajo?

Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed also known as “Farmajo” was born in 1962 in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Between 1989 and 1993, he completed a Bachelor’s degree in History from the University at Buffalo. He followed that in 2009 with a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University at Buffalo again.

On October 14, 2010, Farmajo was appointed the new Prime Minister of Somalia under President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

In early 2012, he founded Tayo political party.

Mr Farmajo comes from one of the Somalia’s major clan, the Darod.
