Garowe-(Puntland Mirror) A key member of ISIS militant was killed in a US airstrike, US Africa Command said in a statement.

The strike happened in the Golis Mountains of Puntland on Saturday, according to the command.

“At this time, it is assessed the airstrike killed one (1) terrorist who played a key role in facilitation for the group.” it said.

The US military has stepped up its campaign of air raids in Puntland over the last few months, killing more than 20 militants from ISIS and Al-Shabab.

In April, Abdihakim Dhuqub who was the deputy leader of ISIS militant group in Somalia was killed in an airstrike.

The Saturday’s attack came one day after Gen. Stephen J. Townsend took office as U.S. Africa Command, replacing Thomas Waldhauser who headed the command in the last three years.
