Mogadishu-(Puntland Mirror) Somalia’s Future Council said on Saturday it is willing in principle to attend the political talks called by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, but only if clear conditions are met, including respect for the Provisional Constitution and a limited, agreed agenda.
In a statement, the council said it would take part only if the 2012 constitution is not “violated or bypassed.”
It said the talks should focus on key national issues such as security, the fight against al Shabaab and Islamic State, cooperation among federal institutions, national unity and humanitarian concerns.
The council also said the meeting must be inclusive and involve all sides linked to Somalia’s state-building process.
President Hassan Sheikh announced the national dialogue initiative on Jan. 19. The talks are expected to begin in Mogadishu on Feb. 1, at a time of political tension and ongoing security challenges.
The council said it is ready to attend in a “responsible way” if its conditions are respected, warning against steps that could lead to political disputes or a constitutional vacuum.
The Future Council was formed in October 2025 and comprises Puntland, Jubaland and several former Somali leaders. It says it aims to provide a political platform focused on national consensus and Somalia’s future direction.
