Mogadishu-(Puntland Mirror) Five people, including Somali and UAE military officers, lost their lives on Saturday at a Mogadishu base following a shooting incident, Reuters reported. Sources within the army and medical facilities confirmed the fatalities.
The United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Defense issued a statement, revealing that three of their soldiers and one Bahraini officer were killed during a “terrorist act” while training Somali forces. Additionally, two personnel sustained injuries.
The gunman, a newly trained Somali soldier, was also shot dead at the Gordon military base managed by the UAE, said the army officer, who gave his name only as Ahmed.
Responsibility for the attack was claimed by the militant group Al-Shabaab via its Radio al-Andalus.
Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, offered his condolences to the UAE, according to an official statement released by his office.
