Garowe-(Puntland) Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC) said it had completed voter registration exercise for upcoming municipal elections.

The voter registration exercise was conducted in the districts of Qardo, Eyl and Ufeyn for two weeks and a four-day extension to each district.

The number of people who registered as voters in the three districts will be released soon, the commission said in a post on its Twitter on Monday evening, adding that the TPEC will set the date for the election, which is expected to take place this year.

The three districts of Qardo, Eyl and Ufeyn have been selected for the early local government elections and will be followed by the rest of Puntland, according to the TPEC plan.

About nine registered political associations including the government’s association named Kaah will contest in Puntland’s upcoming municipal elections, which will be the first multi-party democratic system of the 23-year-old state situated in north-eastern Somalia.
