Somali pirate kingpin killed in Mudug region

Galkayo-(Puntland Mirror) Ahmed Mohamoud Mohamed, popularly known as Garaad, who was one of the Somali pirate kingpin was killed in Mudug region on Monday, his relatives and police said.

Garaad was ambushed and killed by armed men in Olfuula area in Mudug region, police officials in Galkayo told Puntland Mirror.

He was heading to Galkayo from Hobyo when the killing occurred, according to the police.

It is unclear who was behind the attack, but some of his relatives told Puntland Mirror that there was a strong dispute between him and local militia.

Believed to be 50 years old, Garaad was involved in several hijacks in the Gulf of Aden during the Somali pirate era.

In 2011, Garaad was captured by Iranian naval forces and he spent about eight years in jail but he was freed in February this year and returned home.
