Al-Shabab vows to assassinate newly elected parliamentarians

Garowe-(Puntland Mirror) Al-Shabab armed group has vowed to assassinate the newly elected Somali parliament members, MP said.

A Somali MP hails from Puntland, who asked not to be named, told to the Puntland Mirror by phone that he got a text message from Al-Shabab, which they threatened to kill him.

“I received a text message from Al-Shabab, and they told me that they will kill me if I will not resign my membership of Parliament.” The MP said the message read.

Since 2012, 18 parliamentarians have been killed in Mogadishu, most of the killings have been claimed by Al-Shabab armed group. In addition more than a dozen MPs survived assassination attempts.

The newly elected members of parliament will meet in Mogadishu over the next few days to vote for the new president of the country.
